Embedded USB To RS-232 Fits DB9 Form Factor
Converts any Female DB9 to a
USB endpoint
Copeland Communications, Inc., Gahanna,
Ohio, June 22, 2009. . . Copeland Communications today announced its
CC-USB232 universal USB to RS-232 communications module in a DB-9 form factor. The device requires no hardware or
software changes on either the product or the host system. Drivers for the PC, MAC or Linux
system make the USB interface appear as a COM port to the host computer.
By providing an efficient and transparent interface between the customer’s
product and host platform, the CC-USB232 extends the life of older products that
would otherwise need to be redesigned.
Since the CC-USB232 replaces the on-board DB-9, only a single USB-mini
cable is needed to connect to the host platform.
This makes for a seamless and more robust connection. A version of the CC-USB232 is also
available with a 2x5 header so that the device can be used with a ribbon cable. The design was achieved through a
close collaboration with the packaging design team at ALPTEX, Inc.
According to
Copeland Communications, Inc., CEO, Scott Copeland, “As the computer industry
migrates toward USB, fewer and fewer are coming with RS-232 ports. In the embedded world, however, there
are still a large number of single board computers with these ports available. Since the CC-USB232 requires no
design changes, a single existing product can continue to be used for either an
RS-232 or USB interface. Bulky,
expensive USB cable adapters make the product feel old and clunky“.
Seamless Integration. The CC-USB232 replaces existing DB-9
female connectors. The CC-USB232-C
may be used for systems using 2 by 5 headers connecting to the CC-USB232 via a
10 pin ribbon cable. Drivers may be
customized to identify the CC-USB232 as the customer’s product.
Customizable drivers. Copeland
Communications’ CC-USB232 comes with standard drivers for Windows, MAC and
Linux. Utilities are available to
customize the driver and installers to match the product the CC-USB232 is
installed on. This completes the
seamless interface.
Pricing and Availability.
The CC-USB232 sells for under $17 in 1k
quantities, and is available through
Saelig Systems (www.saelig.com) or Copeland
Communications, Inc. at www.copelandcommunications.com.
